The online course includes 30 hours of instruction and allows students to learn at their own pace. Quickly or slowly, your choice.
The voluntary study session at 17-Mile Driving School classroom in Santa Cruz is to emphasize safe driving techniques of space management, vision, road rules and adjusting for roadway conditions. Students must create a 17-MDS online driver education student account and bring their computer to the voluntary session. Students who complete 17-MDS online course will receive a DMV driver education completion certificate. Parents are encouraged to attend a Q & A. Voluntary study session availability is limited.
A DMV “office appointment” for the permit test can be made at DMV.ca.gov.
NEXT STEP AFTER COMPLETING DRIVER EDUCATION
In order to take the knowledge test at the DMV the teen must be at least 15½ yrs. old and will need the following documents:
- Original birth certificate, California identification card or current passport
- Social security card
- Online Driver Education Completion Certificate (DL 400C)
- Two California residency documents
- License application form DL44e (can be accessed online) signed by parent/guardian DMV.ca.gov
- Application fee (currently $45, subject to change)
- Glasses/contacts, if needed
Once the DMV knowledge test has been passed the new driver will have a permit and will need to meet with a driving instructor for the behind-the-wheel driver training. A driver license application is valid for 12 months, from the date the application was first submitted. Please be aware of the permit expiration date.
